MY ROLE

I worked on this project as a product designer for an internal innovation challenge at Sage Software Inc.

I was part of a small team with talented engineers, PM and architects. I was responsible for the research, user experience design, interaction design, visual design, branding and front‑end development for marketing site.

THE CHALLENGE

Our end consumers approached us to help them better manage tasks, analytical information and user roles across different Sage accounting apps they are currently using. This involved creating a new responsive website to serve as a central information hub and envisioning how we could utilize the portal to enable users to establish efficient communication within their own organizations. With a 6 month timeline we focused on building an application that delivers smart and meaningful information to users and empowers them to accomplish business goals more efficiently.

THE DISCOVERY

The absence of a central hub meant when user wanted to switch between different apps, they needed to visit multiple login pages to access their accounts. The log-in and log-out process hindered the workflow for users with multiple Sage services, and thus diminished their motivations to stay within the ecosystem.

Throughout the project we created predictive personas, conducted usability research and used agile design method. This approach was necessary to predict real-world user scenarios and understand user's workflows across different industries.

Findings from our studies indicated users and prospects want to have a one-stop-shop for useful information across Sage services, be abled to manage apps and establish effective communication channels within their organizations.

THE VISION

Our vision was to create a central hub that gathers information, tracks progress of on-going projects and establishes effective communication. We envisioned a task-based platform that allowed all levels of users to be connected and involved through active collaboration. In simple words, an application that provides meaningful information to inspire each team player to contribute and feels awesome.

THE FRAMEWORK

Before moving forward to building wireframes and apply UI treatment, we invested heavily into personas and workflows. During this process we created user scenarios and comparative analysis to better predict user behavoirs. We faced great challenges with seamless integration of existing services due to back-end system constraints and server side authentication limitations.

Pre-defining user roles was more challenging than expected as the role types need to make most sense for users in different industries and provide clear user privilege associated with each role for the administrators.
